Mentor Walter O'Brien Makes Fifth Speaking Appearance at Founder Institute


Walter O'Brien, Scorpion Computer Services founder and real-life inspiration behind the hit CBS-TV series Scorpion, was the featured speaker at the Founder Institute on April 6, 2015, where he spoke on "How Not to Get Burned by Technology." O'Brien serves as a mentor at the institute, a foundation that helps aspiring founders across the globe build enduring technology companies. The Founder Institute has chapters in 50 countries and has helped launch over 1,563 companies in five years, thanks in part to the advice and experience of O'Brien and the institute's other notable mentors.

Walter O'Brien, in alignment with the Founder Institute's mission to "Globalize Silicon Valley" and build sustainable startup ecosystems that will create one million new jobs worldwide, has helped hundreds of startups avoid the common missteps of fast growth companies.

Outsourcing software development is a common trouble spot, according to O'Brien. "We are in the business of selling airbags," he said, "Unfortunately we end up selling them at the scene of the crash. [...] Eighty percent of outsourced software projects fail. So you better know exactly what you are requesting. The unfortunate common root cause of bad development is that you have not taken the time to fully define and communicate your requirements and deliverables in enough detail."
